今年彫った面 （Masks I carved this year） ― 2024/11/02
気温が高いうちに塗っておこうと今年作ったお面に漆を塗りました。
全部で7個。自分で言うもの何ですが、並べて見ると凄みがありますね。
ホントはもう倍くらいの数を並べて見たかったんですが。
I'll apply it while the temperature is still high.
I applied lacquer to the mask I made this year.
There are 7 pieces in total
Even if I say so myself, but it's amazing when you see them side by side.
I really wanted to see twice as many lined up.
彩色の前にもうひと踏ん張り、胡粉塗という一仕事が待っています。
粉まみれになります。当然手間暇間かかります。なので大難儀前にこうして
つかの間のひと時を過ごしています(笑)。
I have to take one more step before colouring.
There is still a job called whitewashing.
You will be covered in powder. Of course it takes time and effort
So this is how I spend a fleeting moment before the hard job.
どれが般若黒でどれが赤？そんなことは知っている人は
知っていますが、そんなことはどうでもいいじゃないですか。
知らなくても誰も困らない。
Which is Hannya black and which is red?
Those who know this know that. It doesn't matter, right?
No one gets hurt even if you don't know.
最初の内は数えていましたが、数多く作っていると
「これは何個目？」なんて思うようになり、人にもやったりして
ついに分からなくなり。面倒になったのかな。
I was counting at first
When I make a lot of them, I start thinking, "How many pieces is this?"
I give it to others and eventually I don't understand it anymore.
I guess it became a hassle.
もしかしたら辻褄は合わないのが自然であり、合わせようとして時間を費やす。
こんなことはもしかしたら時間の無駄なのかもしれない。サラリーマン時代、
「評価は他人がする。」と言われたことがありますが、
Maybe it's natural that things don't fit together.
I spend time trying to match. Maybe this is a waste of time.
When I was an office worker, I was once told that "other people make evaluations.''
「どうぞ、勝手に。」と今となっては開き直りますが、 確かにそれも真実です
、ハイ。でも家庭に仕事は持ち込みたくないですな。
最近、こう思うことも多くなりました(笑)。

I've come to realize this now, but it's certainly true.
But I don't want to bring work into my home.
Lately, I've been thinking about this more and more.
しかし漆とは何て不思議なんでしょう。漆器に使われるように耐久性と
防水と接着剤を兼ねた素晴らしいものです。
漆を扱っていると天然のプラスチックと言われるのもよく分かります。
ただ一つ難点が、かぶれますが(笑)。
But how mysterious is lacquer?
As used in lacquerware,
it's a great product that is durable, waterproof, and an adhesive.
When working with lacquer, I understand why it is called a natural plastic.
The only problem is that it can cause a rash.
材料カット (Material cutting) ― 2024/05/02
今週初め40年ぶりに学生時代の旧友二人に会ってきました。
千葉の宮本壮というアパートに住んでいた頃の人たちです。
Earlier this week, I met up with two old friends from my school days
for the first time in 40 years.
These are the people who lived in a flat called So Miyamotoso in Chiba.
お互い歳を取って一見しただけではわかりません。
既に40年も経っているのですから。
Now that we're both older, we couldn't tell each other at first glance.
40 years have already passed since we met.
宴席ではこれが最後かななんて冗談も出たりして。
いつの間にか20代のあの頃に逆戻り。
余りのなつかしさにこれ以上書ききれません。
At the banquet, there were jokes about whether this was the last time.
Before we knew it, we were back in our twenties.
I'm so nostalgic that I can't write any more.
少し暖かくなってきたので材料カットをし始めました。
まだ気力・体力のあるうちにやっとかないと。
作業がハードなのでいい加減これが最後となるかな。
It's getting a little warmer, so I started cutting materials.
I have to do it while I still have the energy and stamina to do it.
The work is hard, so I guess this will be the last one.
1日に4～8個切るのがやっとかな。
数時間の格闘の末、ヘロヘロになって作業が終わります。
ここまでするのに2年近くかかり、これでやっと材料のストック準備も
一段落しました。
I think I can barely make 4 to 8 pieces a day.
After several hours of fighting, I was completely exhausted
and the work was completed.
It took almost two years to get to this point.
With this, I have finally finished preparing the stock of materials.
今年の夏は昨年以上に猛暑・酷暑・・・電気代が気になります。
Will this summer be even extremely hotter and hotter than last year?
I'm worried about my electricity bill.

今年の冬は大雪の予報も出ていますが、12月なのに刺すような寒さは
なく、スノータイヤはアスファルトの上を走り続けています。
Heavy snow is forecast for this winter.
Even though it's December, it's not bitingly cold.
My car with studless tyres has been continuing to run on the asphalt.
昨年の今頃、材料の丸太を仕入れてから1年となります。
何せ数があるのと疲れるから1年経ってもまだスクエアの形の段階です。
夏の猛暑でクラクラしながらノコギリで形を整えていたことが思い出されます。
It has been a full year since I purchased the logs for the material around this time last year.
Even after a year, it is still in the square shape stage.
because there are a lot of them and the work is tiring.
I remember using a saw to shape it while feeling dizzy in the intense summer heat.
今年の冬は今度は逆に寒さに震えながら角を取る作業が待っています。
その前にケガキ作業があるか。「嫌だな。」と思いつつも、それをやらなきゃ
前に進みません。
Next time the work of removing the edges is ahead in the frigid cold.
Is there some scribing work to do before that?
Even though I don't like it, I can't move forward unless I do it.
ノコギリを使うだけ体が発熱して暖かくなるのが唯一の救いですが。
週末しか時間が取れないので春先まででこれを続けて、彫りの第一発目は
5月の連休頃となりましょうか。
The only saving grace is that my body generates heat and gets warm because I use a saw.
I only have time on the weekends, so I'll continue this until early spring.
The first carving will be around the holidays in May.
それまで彩色と並行作業で粛々と進めるのがやっとかな。
それと夏前から結構忙しくなるので作業はそれなりに先伸びになる可能性が大です。
I guess I'll be working on colouring and parallel work until then.
Also, I will be quite busy before summer.
There is a high possibility that the work will be postponed to some extent.
