蝉丸2（Semimaru2) ― 2026/02/01
いよいよ裏面彫ですが、今回は材料が柔らかすぎたようで
見る見るうちに底面くらいまで進みました。
Now it's time for the back engraving.
This time the material was too soft, so it quickly progressed to the bottom.
面の厚さが1～2センチ前後となったところで目鼻口の穴を開けます。
あまり極端な薄さを追求すると丈夫さが損なわれるので、ほどほどな
ところで止めます。
Once the mask is about 1 to 2 centimeters thick,
I'm cutting out holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth.
If you pursue extreme thinness too much, its durability will be compromised.
I'll stop here before it gets too long.
ここまで来るとそろそろ指が痛くなってくるので、休み休み彫ります。
左手で面を押さえるので左手の指も痛くなります。
やり過ぎると翌朝、指が強張って心配になるので、ほどほどで止めるとします。
By this point, my fingers are starting to hurt, so I take breaks as I carve.
Since you press the surface with your left hand, your fingers will also hurt.
If I overdo it, my fingers will be stiff the next morning and I'll be worried.
I'll stop there.
この彫る作業というのは夢中になれるので続けられるんでしょうね。
スーっと彫刻刀が進むのを見ると気持ちがいいですもんね。
It's probably because you can get so absorbed in the carving work
that you can keep doing it.
It feels so satisfying to see the carving tool glide smoothly.
しかし身体も発熱し熱くなるので夏はクーラーが必要です。
しかし今年の冬は大雪で気温が低いので暖房ももちろん必要です。
However, your body also generates heat
and you will need an air conditioner in the summer.
However, this winter has been heavy with snow and low temperatures,
so heating is of course necessary.
何はともあれ順調に彫っていますが、数が増えてくると今度は
彩作業が思いやられます。ま、彩色もやっているとそれなりに
これはこれで色の調合に悩みます。
Anyway, I'm carving smoothly.
It's not looking good when the numbers increase, especially for the colouring work.
When I'm doing colouring, I struggle with colour mixing in its own way.

昨日は降りましたね。風がなかったので見る見るうちに積もりました。
久々の大雪で新潟市内では30センチくらいかな。
歩道は抜かるので避けて、ズルして車道の轍を歩きます。
It finally snowed yesterday.
The snow piled up quickly because there was no wind.
It's been a while since we've had such heavy snow, it's about 30cm in Niigata city.
The sidewalk is muddy, so I'll cheat and walk in the tyre tracks on the road.
近所の家の木々を見るとまるで浮世絵ですね(笑)。
雪が柔らかいうちにと駐車場の雪かきを２回ほどして大難儀でした。
雪かきもこれでマックスだといいんですが。
The trees by my neighbor's house look just like Ukiyo-e paintings, don't they?
I had a terrible time shoveling snow from the parking lot twice,
trying to get it done while the snow was still soft.
I hope this is the most snow shoveling I have to do.
昔、ホンのちょっとだけかじった冬山の二王子岳を思い出しました。
まるで別世界で絶景のオンパレードで大感動だったのが思い出されます。
今はもう体力も年齢も？落ちたので無理かな。でも夏山はまた行きたいな。
I remember Mt. Ninoji, a winter mountain I briefly experienced in the past.
I remember being deeply moved by the parade of spectacular views,
feeling as if I was in another world.
I'm no longer physically fit and too old now so I can't do it now.
ネットで山行記録なんかを見ていますと過ぎ去った数十年が思い出されます。
体力維持には登山は持ってこいなんでしょうね。
When I look at mountain climbing records online, I am reminded of decades gone by.
Mountain climbing is a great way to maintain your physical strength.
ちょっと脱線しましたが、蝉丸は順調に進んでいます。
目の彫りにそれほど神経を使わないんですが鼻から口元にかけての
曲線にちょっと気を使います。
Where were we? But Semimaru is progressing smoothly.
I don't pay much attention to carving the eyes.
I put a little attention to the curve from the nose to the mouth.
膨らみを目立たせるには凹みをさらに深く彫ればいい。ということに
なりますが、これを繰り返すと材料を削り過ぎてなくなってしまいます。
この辺りは型紙に数値を反映させるのが難しいですね。
To make a bulge stand out, you need to carve the hollows deeper.
If you keep doing this, you'll shave away too much material and it will be gone.
It's difficult to reflect the numbers in the pattern here.

以前作った蝉丸は知り合いのそのまた知り合いのところに行ってしまい
手元になくなったので作ります。最初のは確か2006年だったので実に
17年ぶりに作ります。
My previous work"Semimaru" was given to a friend of a friend.
I need to make another one because I no longer have it.
The first one was in 2006, so this is the first time I've made one in 17 years.
盲目の少年なので一番神経を使う目が女面ほど難しくないので少しは楽です。
前回は五泉市の農家から調達した硬い桑の木で作ったんです。
今回は同じ五泉市（旧村松町）黄金の里産のイチョウを使います。
As a blind boy, the eyes, which require the most attention,
are not as difficult as the female masks.
It was made from hard mulberry wood sourced from a farmer in Gosen City.
It's Ginkgo from Ogon-no-Sato, Gosen City (formerly Muramatsu Town).
彫に関しては目以外は女面と技術的には変わりません。
顔の曲面はそれはそれで神経を使いますが、この辺りはフィーリングで
何とか乗り越えています。
In terms of carving, the technique is the same as for women's masks, except for the eyes.
The curves of the face require a lot of attention,
I managed to finish the carving in this area with my gut feeling.
前回の写真を見ると型紙も女面よりも修正がかなり少なかった記憶があります。
ま、表情は彩色でガラリと変わるので、これはこれで淡々と作業を進めます。
Looking at the previous photo,I remember that the patterns also required
far fewer modifications than the women's masks.
The facial expression changes dramatically with colouring.
I will carry on steadily with my tasks.
さて、今週は大寒波が予想されていますがガス代が高くなっているので、
手がかじかまない程度に作業は適度に切り上げよう(笑)。
