万媚6（Manbi6) ― 2026/01/04
今年は珍しく正月から天気予報に雪マークが並んでいます。
こんなに雪マークが並ぶのは学生時代以後余りなかったような
気がしますね。
Snow symbols have been appearing in the weather forecast since the New Year.
I don't think I've seen so many snow symbols lined up since my student days.
しかし外に出ると何となく刺すような寒さではないので、
市内は例年の如く雪は降ってもすぐ溶けるでしょう。
But when I go outside, it's not so cold that it bites.
Even if snow falls in the city as usual, it will melt quickly.
年末からお面も少し捗りました。
久々に作る時は女面から作り始めて感を戻します。
過去のメモを見て一旦頭に入れてから彫り始めます。
I've made some progress on mask-making since the end of the year.
When I make it for the first time in a while,
I start with the female mask to bring back the feeling.
作る前に前回のメモを見ないで彫ると「あれっ、ここどうだったかな。」と
同じ間違いを繰り返すこととなり、5歩前進、3歩後退と言ったことに
なりかねません。何せ毎回疑問点が発生するんですから。
If you carve without looking at your previous notes before making it,
”Um, how was it again?”You will be repeating the same mistakes.
It could be two steps forward, one step back.
I always run into questions.
女面は目元から鼻横までの縦ラインの緩いカーブが一番難しいかな。
この辺りはまだ試行錯誤の段階で、ダイレクトに型紙に反映出来ればいいんですが、
なかなかどうして思うようにはいきません。
I think the most difficult part of the female mask is the gentle curve of
the vertical line from the eyes to the side of the nose.
This is still in the trial and error stage.
It would be nice if it could be reflected directly in the pattern.
Things don't always go as planned.
目を大きくして眉毛のあたりを思い切って削って、頬を思い切って削って
何とか表面の彫を終了しました。表面にペーパーを掛けて、今回の修正点を
メモに残してから裏彫にかかります。

I boldly carved away the cheeks and managed to finish carving the surface.
After sanding the surface and noting the revisions, I will proceed with the back carving.
写真はデジカメで撮ってますが、電池の接触が悪くて画像をPCに入れる度に
細かな調整が必要になり・・・面倒くさいのでこれが壊れてからスマホに切り替えよう。
ともあれ次は表面が終わり裏面に取り掛かります。

It's a pain, so I'll wait until this breaks before switching to a smartphone.
Anyway, the front side is done, so now I'll start on the back side.

おでこと顎の反りを作るため切り落とします。
鋸を使うと昔は疲れたんですが、今はもう慣れてしまい
苦ではなくなりました。
Cutting off the forehead and chin to create a curve.
I used to get tired when using a saw.
Now I've gotten used to it and it's no longer a pain.
鼻の頭を保護するため脱脂綿をテープ止めします。
裏彫はBGMを聞きながら彫ります。
彫り進めて厚みが2センチくらいになったら、厚みを確認しながら慎重に彫りましょう。

I do back carving while listening to BGM.
When it's carved to about 2 cm thick,
you have to carve carefully while checking the thickness.
目・鼻・口の穴は表側から面厚より少し厚く彫っておき、
裏側から最後の一彫で貫通するようにします。
逆だと材料の角が壊れて一巻の終わりとなります。
After you carve the holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth
slightly deeper than the surface thickness,
You'll make the final cut from the back to go all the way through.
Otherwise, the corners of the material will break, and it will be all over.
ま、この辺はフィーリングで直ぐに出来るようになります。
裏彫りが終わりに近くなると両手の指が痛くなるので、
ほどほどにしておきます。

I'll keep it moderate.
やる時間がっても夜遅くまで作業を続けると、次の日指が硬直して
大心配になります。ともあれまた一つ面が彫りあがりました。

Anyway, another mask has been carved.
これで４つまとめて漆が塗れるのですが、気温が低いのでもう一丁
男面を彫ることとします。

蝉丸2（Semimaru2) ― 2026/01/18
以前作った蝉丸は知り合いのそのまた知り合いのところに行ってしまい
手元になくなったので作ります。最初のは確か2006年だったので実に
17年ぶりに作ります。
My previous work"Semimaru" was given to a friend of a friend.
I need to make another one because I no longer have it.
The first one was in 2006, so this is the first time I've made one in 17 years.
盲目の少年なので一番神経を使う目が女面ほど難しくないので少しは楽です。
前回は五泉市の農家から調達した硬い桑の木で作ったんです。
今回は同じ五泉市（旧村松町）黄金の里産のイチョウを使います。
As a blind boy, the eyes, which require the most attention,
are not as difficult as the female masks.
It was made from hard mulberry wood sourced from a farmer in Gosen City.
It's Ginkgo from Ogon-no-Sato, Gosen City (formerly Muramatsu Town).
彫に関しては目以外は女面と技術的には変わりません。
顔の曲面はそれはそれで神経を使いますが、この辺りはフィーリングで
何とか乗り越えています。
In terms of carving, the technique is the same as for women's masks, except for the eyes.
The curves of the face require a lot of attention,
I managed to finish the carving in this area with my gut feeling.
前回の写真を見ると型紙も女面よりも修正がかなり少なかった記憶があります。
ま、表情は彩色でガラリと変わるので、これはこれで淡々と作業を進めます。
Looking at the previous photo,I remember that the patterns also required
far fewer modifications than the women's masks.
The facial expression changes dramatically with colouring.
I will carry on steadily with my tasks.
さて、今週は大寒波が予想されていますがガス代が高くなっているので、
手がかじかまない程度に作業は適度に切り上げよう(笑)。
