小面 （koomote) ― 2025/06/29
一気に暑くなってきましたが、もう一つ女面の小面を彫ります。
全然分からなかった1回目と違ってあれこれと考えて彫ります。
あれこれと言ったのは・・・。
It's getting hot all of a sudden, so I'm going to carve another female mask.
Unlike the first time, when I had no idea what to do, I thought about it a lot this time.
Actually, I said this and that...
最初は何もわからずただひたすら彫ったんですが、彫っているうちに
目・鼻・口の位置、曲線・曲面の形らしきものが今頃になって
おぼろげながら分かってきました。
At first, I didn't know anything and just carved.
Eye, nose and mouth position, curves and surfaces.
Only now have I begun to vaguely understand what those shapes are.
それでもまだ分からないことだらけです。これをきっと「奥が深い」と言うんでしょう。
この時点で欲を出して歌舞伎とか仏像、写楽も能面に・・・と考えると
想像は広がりますが、とてもとても体力がもちません。
But there are still many things I don't understand.
This is probably what they call "profound"
At this point, I became greedy and wanted to make Kabuki,
Buddhist statues, and Noh masks for Sharaku...
When I think about it, my imagination stretches,
but I don't have the physical strength to do so.
小面はほつれ髪は筆で描くのではなく、頭に塗った墨を彫刻刀で彫って表現する
面です。指が震えないで進めなくてはなりません。
The frayed hair on the Koomote mask is not painted with a brush.
This is a mask that is created by carving ink applied to the head with a carving knife.
I have to proceed without shaking my fingers.
まあ、今回も埋木が発生してしまいました。
悪戦苦闘の末、何とか埋めることが出来ましたが、手動で平らな面を作るのが
何て難儀なことか。
Well, this time too, some wood was buried.
After a lot of struggle, I managed to fill it up.
How difficult is it to create a flat surface by hand?
お面は一度彫り上げて基準となるエンピツ線を消すと途端にどこが基準でどこが頂点か
分からなくなります。出来てしまってから顔のセンターと髪の引き分けの中心が合わなくなり、
アレレ？となる。
Once the mask is carved, the pencil lines that serve as the reference are erased,
Suddenly, it becomes difficult to tell where the standard is and where the peak is.
The centre of the face and the centre of the hair part are no longer aligned.
I often think there's something strange about this.
細かいこと言うとキリがないのでこの辺にしておきます。
何はともあれ今までで彫り上げた小面で一番まともとだったかな。
If I go into detail, there will be no end to it, so I will stop here.
Anyway, I think this is the best mask Kooomote I've ever carved.
