今週は昔の知人に会いにちょっと上越まで遠征してきました。

春めいた景色と雄大な妙高連山の眺めを堪能してきました。
歳をとったせいかパソコンの字を見るより精神的に安らぎますね。
というか視野が刻々と変るので飽きさせないんでしょうか。
I enjoyed the spring-like scenery and the magnificent view of
the Myoko mountain range.
As I get older, reading on paper brings me more peace of mind
than reading on a computer screen.
Or rather, the perspective changes constantly, so it keeps you from getting bored.
深井はかれこれ3回目となりますが、型紙の上口・下口ラインが
ちょうどぴったしなんですね。小面系は何度か修正を重ねて

This is my third time in Fukai.
The upper and lower lip lines of the pattern fit perfectly.
The Ko-omote style has undergone several revisions to arrive at its current form.
難しいのは目～鼻～頬の縦ラインが一発で決まらないこと。
頬の膨らみの頂点は最後の最後で決まってくるということかな。
まあ、彫を重ねると分かってくることですかね。
It's difficult to get the vertical line from the eyes to the nose and cheeks right in one go.
I guess the peak of the cheek's fullness is determined right at the very end.
It's something you come to understand as you gain more experience in carving/sculpting, isn't it?
さてと、来週から寒さも和らいでくるでしょうから、やっと仕上げ系
の作業の予定です。２年越しでしょうか。その前に、漆作業が
あり、かぶれるんですが避けて通れません。
Well then, the weather should start to get milder from next week.
I'm finally planning to do the finishing touches on the work.
Has it been two years?
Before that, there's the lacquer work, which causes allergic reactions, but it's unavoidable.
デジカメにはレンズの広角機能というがあるらしく、お面を撮ると丸いところが
さらに丸くなって、お面の両端が垂直に近くなって見づらくなる。
撮り終えた顔は本来とは違った顔になっている。
Apparently, digital cameras have a wide-angle function for their lenses.
When you take a picture of the mask, the round parts become even rounder.
The sides of the mask become too vertical, obstructing the view.
The face that appears after the photo shoot is different from its original appearance.
視覚的にも、写真を元に寸法を決めていくといった作業に対しても、
本物で実物の形が分からないといった悪い結果となっています。
For dimensioning based on visual inspection or photographic reference,
This has resulted in a negative outcome
where the actual shape of the object is not recognizable.
風景写真なんかはそれでいいんでしょうが、
レンズの広角機能は外せるのかな。
That might be fine for landscape photography, though.
Can the wide-angle function of the lens be removed?
深井3 (fukai3) ― 2026/03/08
ここ数日寒いのと同時に毎年恒例の花粉症に早くもなり、
連休まで鼻水と涙目の毎日となりそうです。
車のタイヤはもう交換したので雪もパラつく程度であって欲しいですな。
It's been cold these past few days and my annual hay fever has started early.
It looks like I'll be having runny noses and teary eyes every day until the holidays.
I've already changed the tyres on my car, so I hope it's only a light snowfall.
深井はいかにも中年女性といったお面です。
今回は3回目です。1回目は失敗、2回目は目が垂れ気味だったので、
今回はそれらを修正して如何にも怖そうな表情を目指します。
Fukai is a mask that looks like a middle-aged woman.
This is Fukai's third time.
The first time was a failure, and the second time, the eyes were a bit droopy.
I'll fix those and aim for a really scary expression.
この材料は褐色がかった色を見ても、かれこれ10年以上乾燥させています。
というか、作る方とその他諸事情により時間を取られ手が付けられなかった
というのが本音です(笑)。
This material has a brownish colour,it has been drying for over 10 years.
BecauseI'm too busy making it and other things.the truth is,
I couldn't do anything about it.
今回は目を少し飛び出させて段違いとし、頬を削って痩せ顔にしたいな。
目・鼻・頬の各バランスが大事で、型紙作業の後、削ってはみての繰り返しです。
This time I want to make the eyes pop out a little to make it stand out.
And I want to shave the cheeks and make it look thinner.
The balance of the eyes, nose, and cheeks is important.
After making the pattern, it is a repeated process of scraping and trying again.
材料の状態はすこぶるよく彫刻刀が気持ちよく入っていきます。
が、数時間やっていると指も痛くなるので、
ほどほどのところで止めておきます。
The condition of the material is excellent, so the carving knife goes in smoothly.
After a few hours, my fingers start to hurt, so I stop at a moderate point.
万媚6 （Manbi6) ― 2026/01/12
おでこと顎の反りを作るため切り落とします。
鋸を使うと昔は疲れたんですが、今はもう慣れてしまい
苦ではなくなりました。
Cutting off the forehead and chin to create a curve.
I used to get tired when using a saw.
Now I've gotten used to it and it's no longer a pain.
鼻の頭を保護するため脱脂綿をテープ止めします。
裏彫はBGMを聞きながら彫ります。
彫り進めて厚みが2センチくらいになったら、厚みを確認しながら慎重に彫りましょう。
Taping cotton wool to protect the tip of your nose.
I do back carving while listening to BGM.
When it's carved to about 2 cm thick,
you have to carve carefully while checking the thickness.
目・鼻・口の穴は表側から面厚より少し厚く彫っておき、
裏側から最後の一彫で貫通するようにします。
逆だと材料の角が壊れて一巻の終わりとなります。
After you carve the holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth
slightly deeper than the surface thickness,
You'll make the final cut from the back to go all the way through.
Otherwise, the corners of the material will break, and it will be all over.
ま、この辺はフィーリングで直ぐに出来るようになります。
裏彫りが終わりに近くなると両手の指が痛くなるので、
ほどほどにしておきます。
Well, you can probably get the feeling for it.
As the back carving nears the end, the fingers on both hands start to hurt.
I'll keep it moderate.
やる時間がっても夜遅くまで作業を続けると、次の日指が硬直して
大心配になります。ともあれまた一つ面が彫りあがりました。
Even if you have time to do it, if you continue working late into the night
You fingers are stiff the next day, and you're very worried.
Anyway, another mask has been carved.
これで４つまとめて漆が塗れるのですが、気温が低いのでもう一丁
男面を彫ることとします。
Now you can lacquer 4 masks together,
Since the temperature is low, I'll carve another male mask.
