能面な日々（The days of carving Noh Mask）

増女1(zoh-onna) ― 2021/05/01

増女1は初期の頃、2回目の作品です。ゼロからのスタートだったので

切れないノコギリを使って大難儀したのを思い出します。

Zoh-onna is my second work in the early days.

Because I had to start from scratch, I remember having 

a very hard time with a dull saw.

材料はコナラだったので硬くこの形にするまで一年分の体力を

使った感じでしたよ。

The material was relatively hard konara oak.

I felt like I used a year's worth of physical strength 

to get this shape.

一体どうなるんだろうと不安を抱えたまま作業を続けました。

I continued to work worrying about what would happen.

それでも進めてゆくと段々顔の形になっていくではありませんか。

As I was doing, it was really taking shape, wasn't it ?

増女は目の形がポイントかな。いや、輪郭かな。

目を入れたら完成品を想像してまず、じーっと見つめます。

その後目の形を調整して位置を決定します。

目ラインは目の位置の目安となるので重要です。

The shape of the eyes might be a key point in Zoh-onna, 

or the out-line. After you were drawing the eyes, 

you have to imagine the finished product and stare at it.

Then you adjust the shape of the eyes to determine the position.

The eye line is important because it serves as a guide 

for the position of the eyes.

何とか形にしました。

I managed to shape it.

自家製「漆風呂」です。

屋根のないベランダなので漆を塗る時はビニールシートで屋根を

作ります。でも風が吹くと・・・。

This is a homemade drying chamber for lacquer.

Because it is a balcony without a roof,I'll make a roof 

with a plastic sheet while applying lacquer.

But when the wind blows...

二つ一緒に塗りました。

この下にパックご飯のトレーに熱湯を入れて置きます。

雨が降りそうになるとお湯がこぼれない様に持って家の中に入れます。

漆塗りは天気予報と睨めっこです(笑)。

I lacquered the two together.

You put boiling water in the tray of pre-packaged rice and 

put it under this. When it looks like rain, 

You're taking it in the house so that you don't spill the hot water.

I'm glued to the weather forecast while applying lacquer

when it looks like rain.

完成です。

まずぶち当たったのは「古色」の壁です。

それ以来、悩まされることとなります(笑)。

The first thing I've hit a plateau was to make an antique look.

Since then, I have been suffering from that(laughing).

ゴールデンウィークはどこにも行かないで、面三昧の予定です。

行くとしてもイオン青山店とホームセンタームサシ位かな。

気晴らしに田植えの風景でも見に阿賀野川の土手でも行ってみるかな。

サッと行ってサッと帰って来よう。

I won't go anywhere and going to be a full of colouring 

during Golden Week. Even if I go, it's about supermarket Aeon Aoyama

and home improvement store Musashi.

I think I'm going to go on the bank of Agano River 

to see the scenery of rice planting for a change.

Let's go quickly and come back quickly.
