能面を作っていると古風なものに興味が湧いてきます。3年前に実家に戻って来る前に
関東の見納めにと横浜開港資料館に向かいました。初めて「みなとみらい線」に
乗り、車内アナウンスで「次は馬車道、馬車道」と言っていたのを思い出しました。
Once I started making Nohmask, I've become interested in old-fashioned things.
Three years ago I went to Yokohama Archives of History to take a last look of
Tokyo metropolitan area before I came back to my home. When I got on
Minatomirai Line for the first time, I remembered that the announcement
in the car said "The next was bashamichi,bashamichi".
珍しい駅名だなと調べてみると歴史のあることが分かり「ああ、その時は文明開化の
発祥地に来たんだなと」しみじみ思ったものでした。お昼を食べようと探していると

あるのかなと」と行ってみるとここが中華街であることが判明。「ああ、ここが有名な
横浜中華街か。」と有名な場所に来たのだなと改めて一人感銘したのは言うまでも

しばらく歩き回りましたがムネが一杯になり結局、戻って「すき家」の牛丼で
あっけない昼食となったことを思い出しました。そういえばかの有名な「山下公園」
はこの近くだったっけと思いつつも雨も降りそうだったので、心は既に「今日は帰ろう」
となっていました。
I was walking around for a while, I got a lump in my thoat.

何て計画性のない一日だったと後で後悔したのは言うまでもありません。
自分がオノボリサンでもあることを自覚しながらも都会人のふりをして
サッサとアパートに帰った一日でした(笑)。

Although I was aware that I'm also out of towner, I returned to my apartment
soon pretending to be a city dweller(laughing).
後で調べると「横浜能楽堂」なるものも近くにあることが分かり、もっと調べて
行っておけばよかったと後悔の念に駆られながらも首都圏を離れて実家に戻るもの
運命なのかなと実感した次第であります。
It turns out that there is a theatre which is called "Yokohama Noh theatre"
near here after I looked it up.
I feel regret that I should have investigated more. I realised that
it would be fate to leave the metropolitan area and return to my parents' house.
大型の面ともなりますと材料もデカくなります。
木目に直角に斜めにノコギリで切れ目を入れます。
When it comes to a large mask, the material also becomes bigger.
I'm making a cut with a saw diagonally at right angles to the grain of wood.
その部分をノミで木目方向にカットします。
I'm cutting that part with a chisel in the direction of the grain.
赤い斜線は不要な頭とアゴの部分です。
Red diagonal lines are unnecessary head and chin parts.
輪郭を彫りました。何となく顔となった感じです。
I've just the outline of the face.
It feels like a face somehow.
頭の方からセンターの彫り具合を見ます。
左右の二つの山を見て嫌になってはいけません。
これを削らないと永遠に完成しませんので(笑)。
You can see how the centre part is carved from the head.
Don't be sick and tired of the two bumps on the left and right.
If you don't scrape this, it won't be completed forever(laughing).
顎の方からセンターの彫り具合を見ます。
You can see how the centre part is carved from the chin.
彫っている途中はこんな感じが続きます。
鼻下ラインが決まればだんだん顔がはっきりしてきます。
The situation like this continues while carving.
Once the line under the nose is decided, the face will become clearer.
鼻下周りを削っているところです。
この辺りの彫りはやっているうちに感じがつかめてきますよ。
ただ、各ラインのエンピツの跡が少なくともガイドラインとなって
生きてきます。闇の中でただ一本の命綱を掴んでいる感じです。
I'm scraping around the area under the nose.
You can get the feel of carving around here while doing it.
Pencil marks of the eachlines will be at least a guideline.
I feel like I'm holding a single safty rope in the dark.
皺をエンピツで書き込みます。
皺の溝のV字角度も右と左を違わせると趣が違ってきます。
I'm drawing the wrinkles with a pencil.
If you make a difference between right and left V-shaped angle
of wrinkle groove, it will be tasteful.
デジカメが広角レンズなのでどうしても鼻がどアップ
となりますね。
It's a digital camera, so the nose will an extreme close-up shot.
目ラインの確認です。目の周りの窪みは後から彫ります。
Checking the eye-line.
Hollows around the eyes will be carved later.
センターラインに型紙をそっと置いてみました。
I placed the paper pattern on the centre line.
裏面の反りの部分をノコギリでカットします。
Cutting down the warped part of the back side with a saw.
裏面はオデコと口廻りは別々の穴として
考えます。
I think of the back side as separate holes for the forehead
and the mouth area.
目の上の皺が迫力を生みますね。
The wrinkles on the eyes are very impressive.
ペーパーを掛けている最中です。
目廻り、鼻廻り、と各所キマリを付けて終わらせてから次へと移ります。
面積の広い平らで簡単なな部分は最後としましょう。
I'm sandpapering the surface.
I will move on to the next after finishing the each parts
such as the eyes and the nose.
Let's finish the flat and easy part with a large area at the end.
横から見ると彫りが深いですね。
It's chiseled face when you're seeing from the side.
今回は下塗りまでです。
この手の面は毛描きが多いので面倒です。

This kind of mask is troublesome because there are many hair drawings.
変異ウィルス感染が少しづつ増え、かつ感染経路の分からない感染者も
増えているのが気になりますね。連休はステイホームで
仕上げ塗り三昧というのも悪くはないですけどね。

during Golden Week Holiday.
